Review: Against The Grain Coffee Shop

Places dedicated to gluten free everything are few and far between. So imagine my excitement when a completely gluten free coffee shop opened up in the heart of my local high street. Opened in 2022 and run by Frazer and Chris, the most welcoming couple I have met, you instantly feel at home when you step through the doors. With a modern design and warm lighting you can leave the hustle and noise of the busy high street behind. Those that love to people watch can sit in the window and quietly watch the world go by.

To find a decent gluten free pastry or cake is no mean feat. Coeliacs are used to dry, sometimes inedible food. That’s just the nature of life as a coeliac right? But it shouldn’t be and this couple saw exactly what the world needs and set out to change this. And what a job they’ve done. Sourcing from local suppliers where they can and putting their time, effort and love into creating delicious gluten free food they offer a huge selection of different food to try. Thinking outside the box, they try to incorporate different items to their menu for each season, even tempting this sultana hating writer into trying a Welsh cake on St Davids day. I still think about the creamy pumpkin pie I devoured in November. The light breakfast menu is perfect for popping in after the school run when you don’t want eat something huge at 9am. They have also recently ventured into afternoon tea, providing a selection of finger sandwiches, pastries, cakes, treats and unlimited tea, coffee and iced drinks.

The amazing gluten free food isn’t the only reason to come here. Frazer is a trained barista and they have their own house blend serving a selection of delicious coffees, tea and iced drinks, they also offer various alternative milks. Surrounded by many other coffee shops, it can be hard to compete with a good cup of coffee, but they have certainly done this with the care and precision they take with each cup they serve.

This independent coffee shop stands out from the crowd in this busy village high street providing something that the others can’t, a range of completely gluten free produce with no risk of cross contamination at all, giving welcome relief to coeliacs everywhere. Against The Grain isn’t just for coeliacs too, the food is so good you can’t tell the difference. So wether you’re a coeliac, gluten free as a lifestyle choice or just love good coffee and cake this is the place to be.
